Silhouette of a Tall Ship

Chris Columbus has a reputation to uphold. After 3 successful voyages to the New World, he’s brought back riches and spices that had never before been dreamed of. But this time, he’s in for a trip of a lifetime -- a bad trip.

Come join the Barony of Small Gray Bear as we celebrate the last journey of Columbus, a comedy of errors involving shipwrecks, eclipses, and a rather irritated Governor of Hispaniola.

THL Juan Carlos is preparing a feast celebrating the life of Columbus, from his early roots through his explorations. And a grand revel and tavern shall be open at night to rival the best ever found in Hispaniola.

A contest!

The year: 1503. The captain of your ship has come up blind from squinting at the horizon, searching for signs of the New World. The crew is restless; the weather unpleasant.

Suddenly, there's a bang, and then a slow moan as your ship starts to lean to port. You look around, grab what you deem most valuable, and head overboard.

The next morning, you wake to find items from the doomed ship scattered across the beach. Your mission: create something from these items that you can use to survive -- whether by barter, or shelter.

This is the basis of a special Arts & Sciences competition for this year's Candlelight Camp. Teams of up to three people will compete against each other to see who can utilize the materials found "washed up" on the beach the best. Each person will be able to "grab" one item they held onto before going overboard (items will be considered for inclusion by the judges before the start of the competition).

What items will be included? That... will be a bit of a surprise. Think of things that might have been aboard one of the ships Columbus took with him to the New World. What would have been left of a grounded, decimated vessel? This is what you will have to work with.

Participants may also use items found in the natural area of Camp Taloha -- with permission of the judges. This includes deadfall, grasses, wildflowers, and items from the lake.

For more information, please contact Lady Myra of the Glen or THL Katryne MacIntosh the Strange. Registration for teams will conclude May 1st.

Come join us at Candlelight Camp, May 9-11 at Camp Taloha near beautiful Pine Bluff, AR -- if not to compete, then to enjoy lots of other great activities (include fighting in a feast hall!) and to see what neat A&S projects come from this marvelous competition.
